Posted by Anton on May 30th, 2007

Power Quotient International Co., Ltd. (PQI) officially announced a 256GB SSD Turbo+ DiskOnModule flash-drive that uses Serial ATA interface and 2,5-inch form factor. PQI’s 256GB SSD Turbo+ features transfer rates of up to 60MB/sec and is currently only available as industrial storage option. No product price for end users is yet available and this product itself may not become available to end user.

With growing popularity of flash drive hard drive due to SSD’s shock proof, high stability and low power consumption properties, SSDs have made it’s debut in some of the world’s renown PCs replacing traditional hard drives. Apart from the advantages described, SSDs also have longer average data storage time of 10 years and faster seek times compare to traditional hard drive read / write heads. PQI expects SSD to become the hard drive of the future and in 2008, SSD may replace up to 30% of traditional hard drive market.

1.8″ 64GB Flash-based Solid State Drive by Samsung

Samsung Electronics that it has developed a 1.8″-type 64 Gigabyte (GB) flash-solid state drive (SSD).
The new flash-SSD is based on an eight gigabit (Gb) single-level-cell (SLC) NAND, which provides significantly higher performance over conventional SSDs.

The read and write performance of the new SLC flash-SSD have been increased by 20 percent and 60 percent respectively over the 32GB flash-SSD Samsung introduced last year, meaning that the new SSD’s ability to outperform conventional rotating-media hard drives is even greater than had been anticipated.

The flash-SSD, a drop-in replacement for a hard disk drive, is a secure and reliable means of storing personal or work-related data. It uses instantly-accessible, non-moving NAND flash memory instead of the noisier, power-hungry, jarring-sensitive rotating disc found in conventional hard drives, allowing it to upload and download data quickly and quietly with minimal power consumption.

The new 64GB Flash SSD weights just 15 grams and should be able to provide up to 64MB/s read speed and to be able to reach 45MB/s speed when writing data. The power consumption is going to be between 0.1 and 0.5W, depending on the load of the drive when used.

Samsung plans to start mass production of the 1.8-inch 64GB flash-SSDs in the second quarter of this year.
